The Pearls vs. The Velours

Onyx Records was one of the independent labels that made New York City the official capital of R&B vocal group harmony in the fifties.

The Velours were one of the more talented street-corner groups of the period along with Dave "Baby" Cortez and his Pearls group. The first record released by Onyx - The Velours "My Love Come Back" set the high standard for the succeeding Onyx releases. Their biggest hit-"Can I Come Over Tonight?" entered the Billboard charts in late spring of 1957.

Label-mates The Pearls were the second major vocal group to break through - they enjoyed a nice two-sided local hit with their first single for Onyx "Lets You and I Go Steady," a staple on Alan Freed's radio show in the summer of 1958.

This CD affords listeners the opportunity to experience the golden days of vocal group harmony and two of the more talented groups of the day.
