King Curtis - Groovin With The King
King Curtis is one of the greatest rock, pop, R&B, Soul and Jazz performers of all time, bar none! His tenor sax solos first appeared on Yakkety Yak by the Coasters in 1957 and continued through Aretha Franklin's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in 1971, the year of his death. He was born Curtis Ousley in 1934, in Fort Worth, Texas, and from the time he moved to New York at the age of 18, until his death, was the No 1 tenor sax man for R&B recording sessions worldwide. He backed literally hundreds of artists including; Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, The Allman Brothers, Sam Cooke, Isley Brothers, John Lennon, Nat King Cole, Buddy Holly, The Drifters, the list goes on and on and on.
His first hit was "Soul Twist", in 1962, which went to No 13 on the charts. The recordings on this CD include "Soul Twist" and other singles recorded for small indie labels at the time such as Enjoy, and Fire and Fury.
There was no one great period of King Curtis music, simply he breathed genius into his sax throughout his career. He later went on to have a number of hits including "Memphis Soul Stew" in 1967, his only other Top 40 chart entry. However, his covers of R&B and Pop hits such as "Spanish Harlem" and "Sitting On The Dock of the Bay" were amongst 15 of his singles which made the Top 100.
Tragically, his life was cut short in 1971, when he was stabbed to death outside his apartment in New York. At the time, he was Aretha Franklin's bandleader, and still number one in the studio, a position he maintained for almost twenty years.
