While White is a sorely underrated artist who is often associated more with folk than the blues, this set seemingly aims to lift his reputation by giving him equal billing with the revered Broonzy.
Although White's approach on these tunes is considerably poppier than Broonzy's, both musicians are clearly rooted in the acoustic blues tradition, as revealed on White's lively "Evil-Hearted Me," which showcases his smooth croon, and Broonzy's wistful "Backwater Blues," a spare track that calls attention to his gritty, expressive voice. A concise, budget-priced sampler, this compilation is a fine introduction to both bluesmen.
