Johnny Copeland - Working Man Blues
Born into desperate poverty in Homer, Louisiana, in 1938, Johnny Clyde Copeland went on to bring the legacy of Texas blues to more far flung audiences than anyone before him. His unique blend of old and new styles helped define the modern blues sound that is carrying us into the 21st century.
A young Copeland and his partner Joe Hughes, formed a band called the Deuces of Rhythm and started playing house parties. Before long they were getting decent paying gigs.Copeland cut his first record, ‘Rock & Roll Lily’ in 1958 for Mercury Records. This was the start of a career that would span almost four decades and three continents.
After 1973 Copeland started touring tirelessly and was able to keep his chops up while getting to go to Europe and Asia. In the early 1980´s the blues made a comeback and Johnny was poised to take full advantage. When things started to happen for Johnny, they happened fast. In 1981 he was awarded the blues world´s version of an Oscar, the W.C. Handy Award for his album, Copeland Special. In 1983 he received another Handy Award as Bluesman of the year. He was given the keys to the city of Houston by then mayor Kathy Whitmire at the Juneteenth Blues Festival. His crowning achievement was when he won a Grammy for 1987´s Showdown album for Alligator records. He teamed up with Robert Cray and Albert Collins for this album that continues to sell briskly today.
