Coasters - Best Of The Coasters
The Coasters are a story of how two Jewish teenagers from the north east and a number of black singers from the south met up in Los Angeles and began to change the world of music beyond recognition.
The Coasters comical vocals plus the writing and production of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller perfected an overall concept which produced as many as seventeen hit records between 1955 and 1962.
The Coasters were the white adolescent´s introduction to the culture of the urban black – their songs dealt primarily with promiscuity, crime and the seamy side of life.
Their hits began with ‘Down In Mexico’ (#10 R&B, 1956), the double sided follow up ‘Searchin/Youngblood’ went to #1 on the R&Bchart and #3 on the Pop chart in 1957. They had a string of hits ‘Yakety Yak’ (#1, 1958), ‘Charlie Brown’ (#2, 1959), ‘Along Came Jones (#9, 1959(, ‘Poison Lvy’ (#7, 1959), ‘Run Red Run’ (#36, 1960 and ‘Little Egypt’ (#23, 1961). Their Final hit was a cover of The Clovers ‘Love Potion No 9’ (#76, 1971).
