Clarence Gatemouth Brown - Okie Dokie
Gatemouth Brown is an innovator whose catchy style will please listeners for years to come. Although known as a Texan musician he was actually born in 1924 in Vinton Louisiana. His family moved to Orange, Texas just three weeks after he was born. Clarence may not have been born a Texan but he got there as quick as he could. Though he started out playing fiddle, Gatemouth quickly switched to guitar. His repertoire includes zydeco, blues, jazz and country music.
His first label was Aladdin records in Los Angeles, after which he returned to Houston Texas to record for Don Robey´s Peacock label. These sessions produced many memorable songs: ‘Ain´t That A Dandy’, ‘One More Time’, ‘Okie Dokie Stomp’, ‘Boogie Rambler’, ‘Depression Blues’, ‘Midnight Hour’, ‘Sad Hour’ and ‘Mercy On Me.’ ‘You listen to all of my records from the time I started to today. I don´t go back and try and sound like I did ten years ago. I may take one of those tunes, but when it comes out to be heard again, it´s another piece of music. I´m still growing’.
Today´s Gatemouth Brown still utilizes the styles that made him a legend while keeping his mind open to new emerging sounds. Gatemouth Brown is an innovator whose catchy style will please listeners for years to come. The recordings on this release were made in Houston Texas in 1965.
