Clarence Carter (vocals, guitar, keyboards) is an artist who is one of the greats of Southern Music. His modern deep Blues oriented Soul styled boasting a low-pitched Bluesy growl and what has been called the sexiest groan this side of conway twitty, is unique. Carter (born January 14, 1936, Montgomery, Alabama), has been blind since he was a one year old.
His hits "Patches" (#4POP, #2R&B 1970), "Slip Away" (#6POP, #R&B 1968) and "Too Weak To Fight" (#13 POP, #3R&B 1968) feature on the latter two his impassioned mammoth vocals, his twanging guitar over a solid Soul, Groove and Memphis style horns. "Patches", which was hailed an instant classic on its release, is a maudlin narrative tale of death, destruction and redemption, and has been covered by countless artists, none coming near Carters in emotional depth.
