Texas Punk From The 60’s
In the middle of the 1960’s, a storm came from the UK and changed the values of rock music. The American public rediscovered the natives’ Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll thanks to the Beatles and the Stones.
This new musical invasion dag the path for the young Americans. A new generation of bands, free of barriers, used the energy of rock music towards different ends. Even if the budgets were low ad the concords familiar, the enthousiasm was high. So high that it would spread through every states in the country.
Texas was particularly concerned with the 13th Floor Elevators, The Moving Sidewalks and Zachary Thaks. The Amarillo Undertakers made a new version of Ray Charles’ « Unchain my heart ». Society de Wako made a unique simple often compared to to the legendary 13th Elevators. The Forth Worth Cynics paid tribute to the Yardbirds with « You’re a better man than I » and « Train kept a rolling ».
Blue Thing got noticed thanks to a savage interpretation of « Twist and shout » and the powerful « Ain’t that loving you baby ». One can feel the violence of Dallas on « I need you there » from the Chessmen, who tried on the soft side with « Sad » on the B-Side. After the departure of Van Morisson, the Them settled in Texas. The creators of « Gloria » had a huge influence on the local scene.
Their « Dirty old man » was terrifying. Outcasts from San Antonio created after the Stones, the Yardbirds and Pretty Things. « 1623 Blair » and « Smokestack lighting » glowed. Mouse and the Traps (from Tyler and Austin) was part of the « Public Execution » album on Eva, however « I satisfy » and « Good Times » composed by the leader Ronny Weiss were not included.
