Eric Burdon Biography
"Oh Mother tell your children, not to do what I have done ...". This emotive painful cry was heard around the world in 1964, and House Of The Rising Sun was a number #1 hit worldwide. The band was the Animals, the vocalist Eric Burdon, to many Britain's greatest bluesman. They followed
up with hit after hit next was "I'm Crying/Take It Easy" (#8 UK, #19 USA, 1964). Then "Boom Boom" which went to #43 in the US, where at the time, the popularity of The Animals was beginning to rival that of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The hits continued over the next 18 months with "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (#3 UK, #15 USA), "We've Got To Get Out Of This Place" (#2 UK, #13 USA) and "Don't Bring Me Down" (#6 UK, #12 USA).
Animals fans were shocked in mid 1966 at the announcement that the band was breaking up, shortly followed by the anouncement that Eric Burdon had formed a new band, now known as Eric Burdon & The Animals, who continued to enjoy hits such as "Monterey", "San Franciscan Nights",
"When I Was Young" and "Sky Pilot". The band split in February, 1969. Burdon, who by this time had been living in the USA for a number of years then joined up with an LA band, and Eric Burdon & War was born in 1970. Their big hit was "Spill The Wine". Burdon left War in early 1971,
apparently distraught at the death of his close friend Jimi Hendrix. He recorded an album with Jimmy Witherspoon in late 1971. He next was heard with the Eric Burdon band from 1975, the band who appears on these recordings.
"House Of The Rising Sun" has been re-released a number of times, reaching #25 in the UK charts in 1972. In his book "I Used To Be An Animal, But I'm Allright Now". Burdon recalls going back to England in 1972, and going to his record label for an advance, only to be told by the company accountant that The Animals still owed the label 675 pounds after all those years and all those hits. As he said "That if you take us the challenge of the Blues, the whole world's gonna know your name, but you'll never have any money".
Eric Burdon has recorded his great hits one more time with his band. They sound just as relevant now in the late 90's, as they did in the 60's when done the first time. Just maybe with all that experience of the Blues now behind him, as Eric Burdon has gone from being a young man in music to a
seasoned veteran, the words to his hits have a much deeper meaning. For Eric Burdon would be the first to tell you that he lives, he does not just play the blues.
