Cafecito Cubano - The Robust Sound Of Cuba
It's not comprehensive, it's not chronological, and it doesn't even go into that much depth, yet Cafecito Cubano: The Robust Sound of Cuba is still a fun album that showcases some of the island's musical heritage (let's overlook the fact that Manteca is a Canadian band and that there are two very American songs covered, "Summertime" and "The Lady Is a Tramp," albeit with a Latin slant).
There are older, more traditional-sounding pieces, like Evaristo Quintanales doing "Guantanamera," los Caminantes' "He Perdido una Perla," and Marisela Verena on "La Macorina" as well as jazzier numbers like Doris de la Torre's "Asi," Ana Margarita Martinez-Casado's "Venus," and Pepe Delgado Orquesta's "Silver Star." Huge names like Celia Cruz, Perez Prado, and Beny More are absent, but there's still a lot of passion and good musicianship found within the songs on Cafecito Cubano: The Robust Sound of Cuba, which does, actually, make it perfect for drinking a strong shot of coffee to. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
