In the 1960's Betty Everett (b. November 23, 1939
in Greenwood, Mississippi) had a string of hits
and was one of the hottest female singers in soul.
She had the ability to sing in a number of genres
including blues, rock and roll, standards and her
duets with Jerry Butler went Top 5 on US charts.
Many artists covered her songs including Linda
Ronstadt "You're No Good" and Cher "It's In His
Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)".
Betty Everett signed to Vee Jay in 1963 and the
hits began immediately starting with "You're No
Good", then "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop
Song)" (USA #6, 1964 UK #34, 1968), "Getting
Mighty Crowded", and "I Can't Hear You".
Her duet with Jerry Butler "Let It Be Me" (USA #5,
1964) was one of a number of duets she recorded
with him including "Love Is Strange", "I Cant
Stand It" and "The Way You Do The Things You
Do."
The Vee Jay Label collapsed in 1966 and it was
three more years before she had another hit
"There'll Come A Time" in 1969. She continued to
tour the US and Europe throughout the 70's and
retired from the music business in 1980.
